Letters to My Daughter: July 2014 July 21, 2014   1

Mi querida nina,

Summer is in full swing and we’ve been cooped up with a ton of non-eventful days. I’ve had to work extra hard lately, so I’ve found myself on the computer from morning to night. You’ve been so bored out of your mind, you can’t wait for school to start again.

However, our friend, Mrs. Natalie, invited us to visit the farm she was caring for while her friends were out of town. So one evening after dinner, off we went to the farm…

It was a pretty little farm. Much smaller than our land back home, but full of a lot of the same memories for me.

Mrs. Natalie got you all kinds of excited to feed the chickens. So the first thing you guys did was scoop up some feed and walk around the side of the barn to the open field.

The chickens were quick to follow.

Mrs. Natalie helped you toss the first bucket of grain and the chickens went wild!

But since you like to do things all by yourself, we had to let you toss another scoop without any help. You were so excited… it was too cute.

Afterwards, it was time to feed the sheep. The chickens followed closely… You clearly made some new friends.

We also went to the front garden, ate some blueberries and I had some super sweet cherry tomatoes I absolutely loved!

Watching you take it all in made me wish the farm back home was still active. It was sometime during Nana’s generation that our family started moving away. I remember visiting one of my uncles in Chicago, others moved to New York and even more to Florida. The desire to stick around the farm and care for it grew less and less. My generation barely visited the farm… if at all.

I was lucky, though, even if I didn’t know it at the time. I spent my summers there through my 13th birthday. Not by choice, but simply because Nana sent me back for summer vacations with Abuelita. Chasing chickens, laying in a hammock, climbing trees to avoiding angry bulls and sliding on banana leaves down hills made slick by cow patties. These are some of my fondest memories. I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world and this little farm reminded me of all of them and more.

I wish I could share these memories with you…watch you create the same. But our farm is not the same anymore. Abuelito is too old to care for it. Most of my cousins live off the island and those that do live there seem to want nothing to do with it. It’s a mere shadow of what it once was. The thought makes me a little sad.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and Mrs. Natalie will buy a farm. I know she would let us visit often.

❤ Mami

Oh my your letter made me miss part of my childhood growing up on a farm! (Although I must admit I hated being so far from everything during my teens). Beautiful photos as always! Reply

I didn't appreciate our farm as much as I should have as a pre-teen either and I definitely understand the whole "being too far away from anything" feeling. I would ideally like a mix of both worlds. This little farm does it well as it's not too far away from the city hub. Reply

Thanks Jana! I even got a response from my mom by text on that letter. She's not very tech savvy, so that means a lot. ;) Reply
