For me, the best part of any convention is the cosplay. I have spent many a con wishing I had dressed up as my favorite hero so I could geek out with everyone else.
I know I’m not the only one who feels this way, since there is a large online presence of cosplayers. During last week’s DragonCon, it seems like there were a ton of them out in force.
This year, we tried to take the girl with us for a short day. However, after an epic fail on DragonCon’s part with the long lines for pre-registration, we ended up using most of our time standing in line.
We then trekked over to the dealer rooms, only to be reminded they were just opening when we got there… and we would have to stand in yet again another line. We knew it was just a matter of time before she completely exploded on us, so after 3 hours downtown (2 of those where all we did was stand in line), we left.
Most of my photos from that day were taken while we stood in line and are blurry. All the girl wanted was for her mami to hold her… makes it hard to stay still enough to snap a photo, toddler in one hand, camera in the other.
The second day started with promise, but after a series of delays, we only managed to get downtown 15 minutes before the parade started. At that point, we just couldn’t get close enough to see anything, so we went to the dealer rooms to beat the crowds. Turned out to be an excellent choice.
Most of the photos that day were decent, but underexposed… as I kept forgetting to change my settings as we moved in and out of areas. My wrist was also hurting. I suspect that had to do a lot with one-handing my shooting the day before. So there aren’t as many photos as I would have liked and/or they’re just not up to snuff.
Regardless, I thought I’d share a few with you guys here:
Despite our issues, the con was amazing. You can see the rest of my photos in my DragonCon 2013 Flickr set.
Oh… and after seeing this outfit, I’m officially inspired to make a steampunk Wonder Woman costume. I even bought my first piece for the cosplay!
I also realized, I *really* like taking photos at conventions and I’m wondering if maybe that shouldn’t be my niche. The next one we would probably attend is MegaCon in Orlando (since my mom lives in the area and we wouldn’t have to pay for a hotel.) It would be the perfect place to debut my Wonder Woman steampunk cosplay and do some photoshoots with other cosplayers to see if this is my thing!
Do you have a favorite thing you like to shoot?
